The reason I am telling you this is because content creators such as streamers and Youtubers are having so much influence and power on games and other things.
An example of this is the new phenomenon, “ Among Us”. Among Us was a game that has been released for the past few years now. Around June of 2018 the game was able to be downloaded on Steam and mobile devices.
With this though, there was no success. For the first few months of this game launching there was an average of 3-10 people around the world playing this game a day. During the next year it slowly climbed and was averaging 500 players a day. Still nowhere near enough to make a profit.
This changed during July of 2020 when twitch streamer, “Sodapoppin” streamed the game for the first time for his three million followers. The game went from an average of 2,000 players a day in July to 18,000 people in August and a whopping 151,000 people in September.
Just from one streamer with a ton of supporters changed the lives of the three developers and helped them achieve the most popular game in the world.
This is not the first time something like this has happened before, the game Fortnite was one of the biggest games in the world at a time. However it was not always like this.
The game was announced in 2011 and was locked away for seven years before releasing. This rise to the top was not overnight. The first concept of Fortnite was a building game to fight monsters away, similar to Minecraft.
The game however was not that popular because it did not come out until 2017, and the hype for those types of games died down. Battle Royale games such as H1Z1 and PUBG did increase in popularity, and fortnite noticed that.
They made their own battle royale mode and popular streamers that streamed other battle royale games took notice to that. Streamers such as “Summit1g” and “Myth”, started streaming Fortnite Battle Royale.
The game gained popularity so fast it was becoming a culture phenomenon. The moment that topped this was when Drake decided to stream with popular streamer, “Ninja”. This broke streaming records and the game gained even more popularity.
We have talked a lot about streamers blowing games up, but Youtubers also have this power.
Scott Cawthon was a video game developer who was quite uncessfessful coming out with three failing games. This was until he made 5 Nights at Freddy. A horror game that took place at a knock off Chuck-E-Cheese.
This game took off when popular Youtubers such as Pewdiepie, Markiplier and Jacksepticeye started recording them playing the game. More Youtubers hopped on the trend and the game quickly became a commercial success.
Thanks to a few Youtubers having fun on this game and putting out content Cawthon went from an unsuccessful game developer to one of the most popular ones in the world.
There are also people who review technology that if they leave a bad or good review it can greatly hinder or help a new piece of technology with sales. An example of this channel is Marques Brownlee.
Marques Brownlee is a successful Youtuber who has gained over 13 million subscribers and averaged three million views per video. His word holds a lot of word to the point where companies send him money to review their product and not have a negative review.
Content Creation is slowly taking over the internet with new apps such as TikTok helping this grow. The power that Content Creators have to influence something is becoming more and more popular by the minute. Streamers, Youtubers, TikTokers are more influential than you might think. Next time you hear a popular song, play a popular game, ask yourself, I wonder how this got popular and it might be because of a content creator.
