How To Find The Perfect Club For You

It’s around the time of year where H-F’s many extracurricular activities are beginning to open for new members. But with over 105 different activities to choose from, how can you know which one is right for you?

Well, it depends. When looking for a club or a team, what are you really looking for? A place to hang out and socialize with friends or somewhere you can express yourself? A competitive team or somewhere you can step out of your comfort zone?

If it’s an opportunity to overcome a fear of public speaking, or a way to advance your writing or acting skills, Head Coach Prince Lowe recommends the speech team.

“Speech will improve your confidence. You meet new people and it looks great on your college applications,” Lowe said. “It becomes a place where you belong, where you can be yourself. But speech isn’t a club, it’s a competitive team. We put in work here. Our team won third in state last year, and our goal this year is to beat it.”

Similarly, Assistant Debate Coach Daniel Bush recommends debate.

“Nothing will look as good on your college applications as debate.” Bush said. “It helps with public speaking and thinking on your feet. Our team won first in state last year, the first time in H-F history, and our goal this year is to maintain it.”

If public or competitive speaking isn’t for you either, then maybe gaining real-world hardware skills and expressing your creativity are. If you’re willing to branch out and expand your social circle to all types of people, then technical theater could be just right for you.

“This space brings in some of the most creative people I have ever met. Truly, I believe that this is a space where everybody can belong.” Technical Director Tim Tholl said.

No matter what you are looking for, H-F is sure to have something just right for you.
