Truth Test: Harris vs. Trump

Truth Test: Harris vs. Trump

As Election Day gets closer, we are seeing both of the presidential candidates more and more. Both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump that may or may not be unsupported.
Without having checks on both parties, constituents are led in the wrong direction based on fallacies.

Trump:

“In Springfield, they are eating the dogs. The people that came in, they are eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.”

False

These claims come from a video that went viral on social media from late August. This video showed bodycam footage of a woman in Canton, Ohio who was arrested for killing and eating a cat. Many right-wing pundits claimed the woman in the video was a Haitian immigrant, and have also claimed that other Haitian immigrants have done the same. This, however, was proven false as the Canton Police have confirmed that the woman is indeed a United States citizen. The department also told the BBC that “we have not dealt with any complaints of Haitian immigrants at all.”

“We have inflation like very few people have ever seen before. Probably the worst in our nation’s history.”

False

While it is true that inflation has been high under the Biden administration, peaking at 9% in June 2022, it is not the highest in US history. After the US won WWII, inflation reached 18% and from the late 1970s to early 80s, it reached 14%.

All data was taken from the Madison Trust Company.

Harris:

“Trump left us the worst unemployment since the Great Depression.”

True, but it needs context

The unemployment rate under Trump did peak at 14.8% April 2020, the highest it has been since the Great Depression. However, by the time that the Biden administration took over in January of 2021, that percentage had dropped to 6.4%.

All data was taken from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Trump “killed” a bill that would have secured the border.

True

Earlier this year, a bipartisan group of senators introduced a $20 million bill that would take measures to secure the U.S-Mexican border. It would have added hundreds of ICE agents at the border and would have effectively closed the border when there was a surge of illegal immigrants crossing. It promoted the use of ankle monitors rather than detention centers to be worn while immigrants wait for their case to be heard. It also allocated money to fund legal representation for minors under 13 and gave a better path towards citizenship for Afghan immigrants. After a rough draft of this bill was drawn up, Trump urged supporters to vote against it, ultimately killing the bill.
