This November, America will be facing one of the most critical and controversial presidential elections in years.

Regarding the candidates, one is a former prosecutor and senator who has worked to advocate for women’s rights, immigration reform and tackling the opioid crisis. The other is a felon who has had a history of racism and sexism and shows no care for the American people.

The Voyager has decided that it is our responsibility as a newspaper to endorse Kamala Harris as the President of the United States.

It is tradition in a newsroom to formally endorse a candidate, as the New York Times did for Biden in 2020 and the New York Post did for Trump that same year.

Understanding what Harris has done as a Senator and as Vice President and comparing it to the disastrous record of former President Donald Trump has led us to this decision.

When President Joe Biden initially dropped out of the presidential race, Vice President Harris was the clear answer to be the Democratic nominee.

Many were apprehensive at first.

The idea that Harris would be able to win over the country in a simple four months seemed unlikely, however she has been more successful than most imagined.

As Election Day grows closer, it becomes clearer that Harris is the superior candidate.

Harris’s policies on abortion, taxes and health care are the best way forward for Americans as a whole.

According to Harris’ campaign website, she continues to support a nationwide law that protects the right to abortion, making rent more affordable and working towards student debt forgiveness.

She has advocated for proposals that give tax incentives for building affordable housing, a $10,000 tax credit for first-time home buyers, and many more incentives that make housing more readily available.

Building to make America a place to have basic rights to healthcare, housing and education is the core to building America to be a better place for all citizens.

America was created based on freedom and being a melting pot, a place where everyone can come in and be allowed to achieve the American Dream.

Donald Trump and JD Vance have based their campaign on the blind support of Trump’s minions, rather than bringing in new policies.

Trump’s appointed Supreme Court justices are responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade, blocking access to women’s healthcare around the country.

Both Vance and Trump have both been caught constantly saying both offensive or simply untrue statements, famously claiming during the Sept. 10 presidential debate that,  “[Immigrants] are eating the pets of the people that live there.” along with Vance claiming that school shootings are a “fact of life.” during a rally in Phoenix, Arizona.

When it comes down to qualifications, Harris is a former prosecutor and Senator, while Trump was a businessman and an actor with zero qualifications. He is the only president who has ever served with no political or military background.

Harris has been consistently working as Vice President to, as best as her position allows her to, to advance voting rights and work to secure the border.

On the campaign trail, she has advocated for the passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which ensures that minorities across the country would be able to equally participate in the election process. It keeps a check on states which have a history of voting rights violations to get federal approval before making changes to voting laws.

She also has made moves to help create a better immigration policy.

As a Senator, she signed the DREAM Act, creating a pathway for undocumented immigrants who were brought to America as children to become citizens.

While Harris’ policies on many things do not go in accordance with many Democrats’ personal beliefs, and she is not the perfect candidate, it is essential to vote for Harris.
