Chiefs: NFL's most overhyped

Looking back at the past couple of seasons, are the Kansas City Chiefs the best team in the NFL? Is Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes this generation’s Tom Brady? Are they the most overrated team, or are they perfectly rated? Do they deserve all the hype they are receiving from football fans?

Some believe the team deserves the hype, while others argue they are overhyped due to their success in the league. The Chiefs have been the talk of the NFL community because of their back-to-back Super Bowl wins. However, they are overrated because they went to the Super Bowl multiple times, and other teams that are in the AFC conference should have a chance to go.

In the 2022-23 NFL season, the Chiefs won the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-35, by kicking a field goal in the fourth quarter. During the season, they led the AFC West with a record of 14-3, securing a playoff spot.

In the 2023-24 season, the Chiefs won the Super Bowl again, this time against the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22, scoring a touchdown to clinch the win in overtime. Mecole Hardman scored the game-winning touchdown. This marked the second time the Chiefs defeated the 49ers in the Super Bowl, having previously beaten them in 2019. After winning both Super Bowls back-to-back, the team seeks a third title. They are overrated because the 49ers had the lead going into overtime.

In February, Mahomes expressed his desire to lead the Chiefs to the Super Bowl again after the big win. “I can do whatever I can to get back in the game next year for the three-peat,” Mahomes said. “You must come back with a mentality and learn from guys like [Tom Brady].”

Mahomes has earned a spot as a top-ten quarterback in the league. He has won the Super Bowl MVP three times since joining the Chiefs, leading to discussions about his future as a Hall of Famer. Mahomes is an overrated quarterback because Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has beaten them in the playoffs in 2022.

In September 2023, pop singer Taylor Swift started dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Following the announcement, Swift’s fans began to take over games and Chiefs media.

During the offseason, the Chiefs made several trades and draft picks. On March 18, they signed wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown to a one-year, $17 million contract. In the 2024 draft, held April 25-27, they selected first-round pick Xavier Worthy to bolster their talented offense.

At the NFL combine, Worthy ran a 4.21 in the 40-yard dash, making him the fastest player and rookie in the NFL, per Bleacher Report.

The 2024-25 season kicked off on Sept. 5, with the Chiefs defeating the Baltimore Ravens, 27-20, in their first game. They are overrated because the Ravens had more penalties called, whereas the Chiefs had the same amount of penalties, but they weren’t called by the Refs.

As the season progresses, the Chiefs are currently undefeated, along with the Minnesota Vikings of the NFC North. Both teams enter week six with a record of 5-0. The Chiefs are continuing the quest of getting to the Super Bowl and currently leading the AFC conference with the most wins.
