With impressive personal records and a thoughtful training schedule, the H-F cross-country team’s Matthew Tyrone, Matthis Tyrone, Ryan Castady and Saaungkh Tarrer for the boys’ team, along with Makayla Shulman, Matilyn Terrell and Carrington Hughes for the girls’ team, headed to their sectional meet hoping to improve on the previous year when neither team made it past their conference meets.
The team trained for both endurance and long-distance runs all season to prepare for their events.
“For cross-country, you mainly train for endurance, and we have to run close to three miles or even three miles exactly,” said sophomore runner Talib Clemons. “We usually have speed days or long-distance days, where we run six miles or more or focus on simulating our kicks at the end of the race.”
To prevent injuries, the team uses different methods to help both experienced and new participants.
“The training is hard because we do mile repeats, and to cool down and relax our muscles, we do ice baths and stretches to relieve our bodies,” said sophomore runner Cameron Cornelious.
Both runners have mentioned how well the team is doing compared to last year.
“We’ve had a lot of PRs, a lot of good meets, and whatnot,” Clemons said. Cornelious added, “Compared to last year, we’ve had a lot of good PRs.”
This season, senior runner Matthew Tyrone impressively finished sectionals with a 16:34.85 personal record, followed by senior Matthis Tyrone with a 16:50.40 personal record, and senior Castady with a 16:51.13 personal record.
