On Oct. 28, approximately 60-80 H-F fathers and father figures gathered at the school for the third annual Dad Squad event, organized by Principal Clinton Alexander and Director of Communications and Community Engagement Carla Erdey.
In previous years, the Dad Squad event required significant preparation from Alexander and the staff who helped run it before. This year, Alexander anticipated a larger turnout for the third annual gathering.
The event allows fathers to visit the school, engage with students, tour classrooms and explore the campus. Small groups of fathers walked around the school, learning more about the facilities and their children’s educational experiences.
“I think it’s awesome,” said visiting father Pierre Lewis. “It allows us to see what it’s like for our high school kids, and just seeing the development over the years, especially as it relates to education, is super cool.”
Dads also attend the event to support their children, offering companionship and inspiration to help get their day started.
“To be an inspiration to everyone here, as a father figure and as a father, it’s my duty to make sure every child knows they are loved, honored, and respected,” said H-F dad Wesley Baker.
For Alexander the event is for the students and how the fathers can positively impact them.
“For students who had a rough morning, seeing a bunch of dads giving high-fives, handing out candy, or offering hugs can change their mood. I wish every kid could experience that.”
The dads toured the school alongside Alexander, gaining a better understanding of the campus and the students’ experience. Their presence also helps to foster positivity, especially for students who may not be having the best day.
“They have 9-to-5 jobs, but they took time off to show support and positivity for our students,” Alexander said.
Many fathers were surprised by new features on campus that weren’t available when they were students. “There are some classes we never had, like the zoo biology program where they teach about animals and plants,” Lewis said.
The event also serves to motivate students, putting smiles on their faces and boosting their spirits.
“I came here because I love the H-F community and want to support our students in whatever they’re trying to do,” said Rodney Harris, another attending father.
The goal of Dad Squad is to foster positive interactions between fathers and students, giving both groups a chance to learn more about each other and improve their school day experience.
Looking ahead, the school is already planning for next year’s Dad Squad event. Expect another large turnout, as fathers take time out of their day to show respect and support for the students in every way possible.
