Boys' track team has improved

The H-F boys’ track team has been improving in every track meet by placing higher and higher.

By winning, coach Nathan Beebe noticed the huge improvement with the team and praised the team’s growth as a whole, but also took notice of last year’s issues.

“Yes, the team has improved. The energy, camaraderie, focus, attitude, and drive have all improved,” Beebe stated. “Last year, we had some unforeseen injuries and other issues that shaped our team and led us to underachieve, which the majority of this year’s team witnessed.”

The practices have been helping a lot with the team’s success and accomplishments. By relying on the team’s practices, the boys have their own ways to prepare for their meets. This is leading them to place high in meets and also win.

Junior Joaquin Jordan has been doing things to prepare for his meets, such as lifting, focusing on his diet, relying on his coaches and preparing himself mentally.

“Honestly, just working hard and perfecting the little things. Lifting throughout the week and practicing after school and trusting my coaches,” Jordan said. “Another way I prepare for it is focusing on my diet, on what I eat and drink throughout the week, and just getting myself right mentally.”

The team’s chemistry has become a major factor throughout the indoor track season, which has led them to win many of the track meets that they have attended.

Assistant coach Robert Assise sees the bond between the runners with the upperclassmen creating a safe environment and space for the underclassmen.

The team chemistry has been great. We are very proud of our leaders for creating a positive environment and taking care of our underclassmen,” Assise observed.

One major goal that the team is planning to accomplish is the value of working consistently and also winning a championship according to Assise.

“Our primary goal is to provide an atmosphere for young men to learn to understand the value of consistent work and the rewards that it can bring,” Assise expressed.  “We feel that translates to life outside the track. Beyond that, we like winning, especially during the championship season.”

While the team had their positives, they’ve also faced the challenges. Jordan felt like the biggest challenge that the team is facing is consistency. Due to their high rankings, he felt like that gets in the way of what the team should be focusing on.

I think the most challenging part of the season is just not getting ahead of ourselves and remaining consistent,” said Jordan. “With the success we bring, it’s easy to get distracted in rankings and where we stand in the media. When we focus on that, we’re taking it away from other things that it should be at.”

As the track season moves forward to outdoor, the boys’ track team will continue to improve as the season progresses.
