It is our duty as American citizens to submit our responses to the 2020 Census.
The census counts the population in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and five territories (Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands). The census will provide an idea of who we are and where we live as a nation. It will determine redistricting for political seats, federal funding and business decisions.
The Census has been going on every 10 years since the first one in 1790.
Each home receives an invitation to respond to a questionnaire. There are multiple ways people can fill the form out: online, by phone or by mail.
I know what you must be thinking: I don’t want to answer my door and talk to some random government employee. Not answering your door would be the biggest mistake you make this year.
One of the many ways the government uses your response of the census is by redistricting your area based on the number of people who live in it. The House of Representatives is based on population. The fewer the people in the United States, the fewer the number of seats in the House and vice versa.
According to the Census 2020 website, the population of the United States grew 9.7 percent between 2000 and 2010, meaning the population of the United States grew 27,323,632 people in 10 years.
As a result of that population gain, eight states gained seats in the House of Representatives and 10 states had lost seats in the House.
The results of the census will decide where billions of dollars in federal funding will go. The funding will be directed towards nearly 100 programs throughout the United States. This includes funding for education, highway projects and fire departments to name a few.
This impacts our community directly because the number of people who are accounted for in Homewood and Flossmoor will determine the amount of federal funding the community will get for certain projects or programs.
Results could impact the amount of funding our school lunch program would receive and grants that support teachers and special education.
The census will help the business community by providing business leaders with important information to help them determine if starting a business in a certain location is a good idea.
The census will give them an idea of population trends and growth projects.
Business owners will depend on the data to decide where they will spread operations, where to recruit employees, and what products and services to offer along with if they should even open a business in that area.
The 2020 Census will have an apparent effect on us as a country. When someone comes to your door and asks you or your parents to fill out a survey via phone, email or internet make sure they are aware of the effects of the census on our country.
