The H-F girls’ field hockey team during the season went on a four-day trip (Oct. 4 to Oct. 6) to Michigan to play in a major tournament and tied 1-1. They ended their season with great progress.
This was the first year the girls’ field hockey team had ever traveled to compete in the tournament, ending their season last year with a record of 3-12.
According to head coach and special education teacher Walter Collins, “They’ve shown a lot of improvement in their skills and teamwork compared to last season. The players are really committed, and it’s great to see how they support each other on and off the field.”
The team finished this season 4-6. “The team is doing amazing this year. Although we haven’t won every single game, our effort has grown tremendously. We’ve gotten better at working together and being patient with each other,” said junior Kaila Green.
The team prepares well before each game. Their routine includes listening to music and working on drills.
According to Collins, preparation for each game is crucial to their success.
“It’s a combination of strategy, practice and teamwork that sets us up for a successful game,” Collins stated. “We focus on individual and team drills to sharpen our skills, such as passing, shooting and defensive strategies. We also listen to a lot of music—Latto, Glorilla, Ice Spice, Lil Durk, etc.—to help us stay motivated.”
The field hockey team faces challenges like all sports teams, but they continue to give their best.
According to co-head coach and special education teacher Evan Bercot, “Even though the team is doing well, we still face some challenges. One of the biggest is maintaining consistency throughout the season. Injuries and a loss of focus as the season progresses can make this difficult.” He added, “It can be tough to stay focused and energized, especially this late in the season. Injuries can also be a concern.”
The field hockey team has embraced new opportunities this year and made the most of them, showing their determination.
“Going to Michigan was smooth; we’d never done it before, and I liked it,” said Green. “I really appreciate the coaches for taking the time to make sure we didn’t have to worry about anything.”
The team did great participating while in Michigan over several days, where they experienced great competition and team bonding.
“The team is doing amazing this year. Although we haven’t won every single game, our effort has grown tremendously,” Green said.
The field hockey team had a great season and showed significant improvement in their teamwork and skills.
Senior Samya Sissac, despite graduating, has high hopes for next season.
“I expect the team to keep winning more games, have fun while playing and continue to improve each year,” Sissac said.
