Gas prices have been rising and for many people in and around Homewood that means rethinking summer plans.

Traveling far can get expensive fast, but the good news is you don’t have to go far to have a fun, fulfilling summer.

There are plenty of things to do locally and nearby. You just have to plan smart.

In June, the weather begins to warm up, making it the perfect time to explore outdoor spots. Places like Irwin Park are great for picnics, walking trails or relaxing with friends.

By July, when temperatures are at their highest, people usually look for ways to cool off. This is the perfect time to plan a short trip like heading to Wisconsin Dells.

Known for its water parks and attractions, it’s a popular summer destination that’s only three hours away.

Going for a weekend and splitting gas costs with friends, can make it much more affordable, especially when long-distance travel isn’t realistic.

There is also Deep River Waterpark,a popular water park not too far from Homewood, making it a great day trip without spending too much on gas. You can enjoy slides, wave pools and lazy rivers while staying close to home.

Michigan City offers beaches along Lake Michigan, perfect for a relaxing day in the sun.

You can also relax at home by sunbathing or having a picnic with family and friends.

Walking along the shoreline or collecting rocks and shells is a simple but fun activity. Many people enjoy playing beach games like volleyball, frisbee or even building sandcastles.

Senior Jermaine Davis stated that summer in Homewood is also a great time to enjoy local parks and community events. Families and friends often gather for barbecues, outdoor sports and evening walks.

Downtown Chicago also has a huge food truck festival called The Taste of Chicago which is located in Grant Park, Downtown Chicago.

Beyond the food, the festival usually includes live music performances from well-known artists, and local bands. This gives it a fun, energetic atmosphere. There are also cooking demonstrations by chefs, where you can learn how certain dishes are made.

Overall, there is a lot to do in the Illinois area or close to it that doesn’t involve much gas or extra money.

From exploring nearby places like Cook County Forest Preserves, to spending time at local or outer parks or visiting spots like Millennium Park.

There are plenty of simple ways to stay active and entertained. Taking advantage of free community resources, outdoor spaces and time with friends shows that you don’t need to spend a lot to have a good time.
