Running it back

Over the years, track and field has been a strength of H-F’s sports program. Year after year, both girls and boys teams have built a reputation for speed, power and consistency.

Last year was no different, as both teams showcased exceptional talent and made deep runs in their seasons. The girls finished their season as State champions, while the boys secured a strong runner-up finish at state. Now, as the new 2026 season is around the corner, the question the H-F community wants to know is, can they go back-to-back and bring home two titles?

One of the most notable reasons for last year’s success and the optimism surrounding this year is the blend of experience and talent showcased on both teams. The classes of 2026 and 2027 include several athletes who have made key contributions to the season’s runs. Many of the runners and field athletes are returning, not only more experienced, but also faster and stronger. For the boys, the season means more than just competing; it’s a chance at redemption. Coming so close to a title last year left them hungry to take it all at State. Leaving without the title they believe they should’ve earned has only stoked the fire.“We have the deepest coaching staff in the state, in my opinion. Loaded with experience and insight, our roster is also extremely deep with a lot of up-and-coming athletes and leaders with state championship experience,” Coach Matthew Anyiwo confided.

“We [have brought back] everyone from our second-place finish at State last season, with the exception of our 4x800m Relay. I strongly believe that we will qualify individuals and multiple relays to the State championship to make our bid for another trophy,” Anyiwo added. The state should definitely be worried and ready for what the boys have to show this year.

On the other hand, the girls’ team faces a different kind of pressure as the defending champions. Winning once is difficult, but winning back-to-back requires a different level of execution. With strong leadership and commitment from the upperclassmen, the girls are building on last year’s success. They are heading into this year aiming to prove their championship wasn’t a fluke and that they’re still the outstanding team that we witnessed last year.

” This year we’re looking to recreate the magic we made last year. We’re looking forward to having another great season and repeat based on the principles of, discipline, hard work, and a positive environment.”Coach Tywon Green confided.

Together, both teams are entering this season confident and determined to show that H-F Track & Field is still the best in the state in both the male and female divisions. Coaches have emphasized discipline, teamwork and pushing their athletes past their comfort zones. With so many talented athletes returning and new faces stepping up, H-F Track & Field is positioned for another standout year. But do they have what it takes to win it all?
