“We’ll be a dangerous team going into the playoffs,” Vikings receiver Myles Green said. Despite the 63-62 double-overtime loss to Naperville North, the H-F Vikings continue to exude confidence, showing characteristics of greatness for future seasons to come. The Vikings have experienced ups and downs all season, leading to a 4-4 overall record after losses to Sandburg High School, Lincoln-Way East High School, Bradley-Bourbonnais High School and Naperville North.

With the loss against Naperville North, the Vikings were put in a win-or-go-home situation against Lockport High School. Unfortunately, the Vikings came up short, losing 32-36, eliminating them from playoff contention and ending their season.

The Vikings football team hoped for a winning record this season, which they haven’t had since the 2019-20 season. They finished with a 1-3 conference record, and although they didn’t achieve their goal, they showed significant improvement from last season.

All year long, the Vikings have worked to prepare for every game, which has been a key contributor to the team’s growth. “Our main focus is making practices more focused and intentional, making sure we get better each day,” Vikings receiver Myles Ellis said.

Although the Vikings were eliminated from playoff contention, they showed flashes of promise throughout the season. Against rival Marian Catholic High School in Week 2, the Vikings dominated, winning 35-0.

The Vikings’ offense was particularly impressive. The team had offensive threats all season and was able to put up 62 points against Naperville North, marching down the field drive after drive.

The problem arose toward the end of the second half. The Vikings were unable to close out their lead, giving up crucial touchdowns and allowing Naperville North to gain momentum, forcing the game into overtime. “We have to be able to close games out strong,” Vikings tight end Dajaun Taylor said.

Looking ahead, the Vikings will continue to add pieces to the team and implement new strategies for success. No matter what, they will continue to strive to improve day in and day out, to eventually win the state championship for the second time in H-F history. “The job is never finished until we’re holding that trophy over our heads,” Ellis said. It’s clear the Vikings have one goal in mind and will stop at nothing to achieve it.
